Sangiovese Wines Sangiovese is the most widely planted variety in Italy and is the principal grape used to produce Chianti wines. Sangiovese is also grown in California where it is quite often mixed with Cabernet Sauvignon. Sangiovese wines are dry red wines that are typically medium to full bodied with high acidity and low to medium tannins. The flavors found in Sangiovese wines are sour cherry, plum, and dried herbs. Sangiovese on it's own can be somewhat flat and metallic, so many Sangiovese based wines are mixed with other varieties. Sangiovese wines pair well with sautéed, pan fried, and grilled foods. Most Italian dishes, including pizza, pair well with wines produced from the Sangiovese grape. |
